HPV

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common sexually transmitted infection. In fact, nearly 80% of people will have contracted HPV at some point in their lives.

How is it transmitted?

HPV can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact during oral, anal, or vaginal sex with an infected person. It can also be transmitted during childbirth.

What are the symptoms?

Common symptoms of HPV include genital warts or precancerous lesions, but most infections are asymptomatic.

HPV is an important health problem because it can cause several types of cancer. In persons with a uterus, it can cause cervical, vulvar, anal, vaginal, and oropharynx cancer. In persons with a prostate, it can cause anal, throat, penile, and scrotal cancer. It is important to note that the vast majority of throat cancers in adults result from asymptomatic HPV infections acquired through oral sex. It is therefore essential to take preventative measures against HPV infection.

Is it treatable?

Fortunately, there are treatments for genital warts and precancerous lesions caused by HPV. These treatments might not work on the first try and they can sometimes fail altogether. The best way to prevent HPV infection is to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

The Gardasil 9 vaccine is safe and effective and protects against nine types of HPV that can cause cancer or genital warts. The vaccine is recommended for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 45, although it is most effective when given before the age of 26. Gardasil 9 is given in 2 doses over a period of six months.

It is important to note that Gardasil 9 does not protect against all types of HPV, so it is always recommended to engage in safer sex practices to reduce the risk of contracting an HPV infection.

At the Pharmacie du Village, we are proud to offer the Gardasil 9 vaccine. If you have not yet received the vaccine and are interested in receiving it, we can help. Our pharmacists are able to prescribe and vaccinate interested patients.
